Rapha Mobile Cycle Club visits Signature Cycles Greenwich

June 29th, 8:00am
Signature Cycles of Greenwich

Rapha Mobile Cycle ClubJoin us on Friday, June 29th for a special 8:00am ride and breakfast at Signature Cycles of Greenwich with the Rapha Mobile Cycle Club. Ben and Ryan pilot the Mobile Cycle Club on their trek through North America, visiting an array of events, races, shops, random cycling hot spots, etc.

We’ll head out for a nice semi-spirited (casually brisk?) two hour group ride, departing from Signature Cycles at 8:00am. We plan to keep the group together as much as possible, but you’ll definitely have opportunity to take a dig on a hill or two.

After the ride, we’ll have pastries and croissants, coffee brewed fresh, and you can check out what all Ben & Ryan are traveling around with in that Cycle Club of theirs.

If you’re used to parking in our driveway, the Mobile Cycle Club will be stationed there so we suggest you plan on street parking along Bruce Park Ave.

Get out there and explore! (A Garmin Workshop)

June 28th, 6:30 pm
Signature Cycles of Greenwich

The very distinct sound of cleats snapping into clipless pedals has long accompanied the start of any group ride. These days, it’s becoming more and more common to hear that snapping sound quickly followed by a high-pitched chime. That’s a Garmin’s way of saying it has started recording your ride. We’ve noticed more and more riders using a Garmin to track their riding and fitness. For many people, the ride can’t start until your Garmin has located its satellites and is ready to go.

That said, many people use their Garmin as the equivalent of a basic cycle computer, turn it on at the start of a ride, turn it off when you’re done. That’s perfectly fine, but there’s quite a bit more you can get out of your Garmin to help you explore new areas on your bike.

edge500-250w

The focus of this workshop will be using your Garmin Edge 800, Edge 500, or Edge 705 for navigation on road bike rides. There are different ways to plot out a course you’d like to ride, and different methods for getting that course onto your Garmin in a useable format.

We’ll cover the following:

  • Websites available for creating rides
  • An overview of pre-ride course creation (mapping)
  • Different file formats for courses
  • Loading a course on your Garmin
  • Uploading / storing your ride data

Mental Toughness: Sport Psychology with Dr. Jenny Susser

6:30 pm, Thursday, April 26, 2012
Signature Cycles of Greenwich
RSVP to Lori Hoefer: lori@signaturecycles.com or (203) 485-0500.

Mental Toughness is defined by sport psychologists as “a natural or developed psychological edge that enables mentally tough performers to generally cope better than their opponents with the demands and related pressures that occur at the highest level in sport.” Really, it should say “any level” in any sport, performance, or even training. The key to this definition lies in two words, “developed” and “cope”. This edge can be accessed through mental skills training and practice. Sport Psychology uses mental skills training, similar to a coach using drills or workouts to teach and practice . Once these skills are strong and usable by an athlete, the coping part becomes easier and better.

Dr. Jenny Susser is a Clinical Sport Psychologist with experience on every level. Once an All-American and US National Team swimmer, then coach at her alma mater, UCLA. Now as a Sport Psychologist, she knows what it is to train and compete at the highest levels. Her work with athletes across all sports, ages, and levels gives her experience that when combined with her background, creates a powerful platform of Sport Psychology.

Signature Cycles welcomes Dr. Susser for an evening workshop on sport psychology and improving your cycling performance. You will learn about Sport Psychology and how to apply it to your current situation and level right now! The evening will be two-fold. First, learn about mental skills and concepts. Focus, confidence, and goal setting are foundations of mental skills training and will each be defined and discussed in detail. Second, we will break into small groups and work on how applying these tools to your specific program and needs. It will be a great jump start to your own mental skills training program and put you on a powerful track to accomplish your goals and feel great about your performance.

A Special Look Behind the Scenes: SRAM & Zipp

Paul’s report from SRAM & Zipp’s Product Advisory Board, February 2012.

Seeing and playing with cool bike stuff before it gets released is fun. Having an influence on what great products come next in the bike industry is a privilege. I sat on the SRAM / Zipp Advisory Board with seven other retailers last week. Our group was eclectic in their business models, from arguably the most successful bicycle mail-order owner to owners of tri and road shops from around the country with both single and multiple sites. The common thread that ran through the group was that we challenge ourselves, our staff and our businesses to be on the cutting edge of bicycle technology. We don’t stay stagnant and we expect our manufacturers to give us intelligent, well thought out and executed products that will enhance our clients’ cycling experiences. This group would chew up and spit out any pretenders. The “powers that be” at SRAM did their homework and truly wanted to know how they can be the preeminent player in their market. Our group was not short on giving comments and advice.
